By taking the best bits of a smartphone and a tablet and dubbing it a “phablet,” Samsung impressed the whole tech world with its Galaxy Note. With the release of the Note 2 in late 2012, Samsung set the bar even higher.Yes, its size may put some people off, but there can be no denying that this is a beast of a smartphone. Packing a 5.5-inch, 720 x 1280 resolution, 267ppi display, the Note 2 does a pretty good job of providing extra real estate without being too big for the pocket. The wonderful colour reproduction of the screen makes it the phone’s standout feature; however, there is a lot more to love under the hood. Samsung’s own Exynos 4412 Cortex A-9 quad-core processor and 2 GB of RAM mean that everything from gaming to watching movies is tackled with ease on the silky smooth Android Jelly Bean. The same 8-MP camera used on the Samsung Galaxy S3 provides solid image and video results and has a feature line-up to ensure boredom is never an issue. There is also plenty of room to store these images with 16, 32, and 64 GB versions of the device and a micro-SD card slot.Anyone struggling to come to terms with the size of the screen can take advantage of the super-responsive S-Pen stylus. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (further down the list) has now taken centre stage as the mobile markets number one phablet.Get the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 at Vodafone (no other UK networks now stock the SG Note 2)

- The Sony Xperia Z even though launched back in February 2013 is still an excellent phone and one worth catching on a UK network due to it's lower price than many of it's competitors. It offers excellent value for money and still boasts 2 GB of memory and a powerful Quad Core processor receiving an average score of 8.3 out of 10 from 5 of the big phone testing sites including a 9/10 from techradar.
